Harlem Lacrosse & Leadership

Harlem Lacrosse & Leadership

Harlem Lacrosse and Leadership’s growth and success is an inspiring story. I have been so impressed with all of the things I have learned about the organization.  The reasons why lacrosse appealed to me at a very young age similarly attract to boys and girls around the world, these are: it’s a fun game to learn and you don’t have to be the fastest or biggest to excel. I notice that HLL and its directors do an outstanding job at emphasizing teamwork, hard work and respect. The fact that HLL started with 11 students, grew to 35 by 2011 and today has exploded to over 340 enrolled students is beyond impressive.  So far they have had 40 students receive scholarships exceeding $40 million dollars to secondary schools and universities like the Peddie School, West Point, Colby College and Haverford.  In 2013 HLL made a road trip to UVA, thanks to HLL Director, Wyatt Melzer’s connections as a former player.  I thought this trip was a great idea and it seems like it established a foundation of the program’s core values and vision.  The illustrious Coach Starsia presented new uniforms to the kids and offered some motivational words in a speech to the kids.  What he said still resonates with me and that is, “If you treat the game with respect you will have a friend for a long time.”
